Getting Around!

Accessible transportation for seniors helps to keep them active and engaged.

Westminster Canterbury Richmond residents have a lot of opportunities to attend events on and off campus. Our Transportation Department gives our seniors the mobility they might now lack to live an active, fun life filled with the events they have always enjoyed.

Losing mobility is particularly vexing for seniors. Getting around and getting out are not as easy as before. As a leader in senior living, we have invested in a wide variety of transportation options to make certain all residents have the opportunity to participate in their favorite activities.

“Our transportation services are available to the residents for medical, grocery, shopping and personal appointments daily, Monday – Friday. We also provide after hours transportation for the various recreational venues, as well as private party transport requests,” says Rena´ Robinson, Manager of Courtesy Services. “Our fleet of vehicles consists of sedans, wheelchair-accessible vans and buses. We also provide a daily campus shuttle to get our residents to events from one end of the campus to the other. Sundays are especially busy with our many trips to local church services.”

Do you know a senior who needs transportation? Here are some tips on how to help get them moving in the right direction:

  • Senior Connections (http://www.seniorconnections-va.org/) offers a comprehensive range of services for seniors. As part of the Capital Area Agency on Aging, the organization is dedicated to helping seniors maintain quality of life and independence. They publish and regularly update a list of transportation options.
  • Check with your local church. Many of the larger ones have a senior van service or a committee that offers door-to-door service for members who no longer drive.
  • Uber is an online transportation network company that allows consumers with smartphones to submit a trip request, which is then routed to Uber drivers who use their own cars. Service is currently available in over 66 countries and 449 cities worldwide.
