Westminster Canterbury Richmond Marks 50th Anniversary with Completion of Vibrancy! Expansion

For five decades, Westminster Canterbury Richmond has raised the bar on culture, creativity and care … and it’s just getting started.
In 2025, this award-winning, fully accredited Life Care retirement community will celebrate 50 years of enabling seniors to Live Life Well. To top it all off, its newly completed Vibrancy! expansion sets the stage for residents to explore boundless opportunities in retirement living for decades to come.
“Westminster Canterbury is grateful to have spent the last 50 years improving the lives of seniors and channeling our energy to serve the community beyond our gates,” President and Chief Executive Officer John D. Burns says. “With our new Vibrancy! expansion, we’ve taken a giant leap forward in our mission to help our residents stay independent and engaged while maintaining a sense of vitality at every age.”
Celebrating 50 years of incomparable retirement living
Westminster Canterbury Richmond was established in 1975 with a driving vision: to improve the lives of those they serve every day. This statement includes residents, staff, family members and those living in the surrounding community. One of their most unique initiatives was to open an on-campus Child Development Center that cares for children of employees and other families from the surrounding neighborhood. There, a unique intergenerational program brings children and residents together for activities that foster learning, joy and social connections. “Our intergenerational program makes us more than just a senior living community,” Burns says. “It also makes us part of Richmond’s fabric of life.”
In 1987, Westminster Canterbury Richmond also became the first Richmond-area retirement community to earn accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and it has maintained that credential ever since. CARF accreditation is a rigorous process that typically lasts 9 to 12 months—making it a key differentiator among retirement communities. By earning this voluntary designation, Westminster Canterbury Richmond has demonstrated a commitment to continuously managing risks and improving the delivery of services.
Today Westminster Canterbury Richmond is home to nearly 900 residents in independent living, assisted living, memory support and healthcare, and employs close to 600 dedicated staff members. As a faith-based charitable organization, it continues to live a mission of providing services in a compassionate, professional and holistic manner, creating a dynamic, inspiring environment for residents and employees.

2025: A year for Vibrancy!

This banner year also marks the completion of Westminster Canterbury Richmond’s highly anticipated Vibrancy! construction project. Vibrancy! adds 118 spacious one- and two-bedroom Vitality Apartments and Village Apartments. All feature an array of floor plans and upscale design elements. The campus also includes enhanced dining and social spaces, new walking paths and colorful gardens, all designed to promote community connections and engagement.
A state-of-the-art Vital Living Center is part of the picture, offering services that cultivate the physical, emotional and social well-being of residents. This wellness hub houses leading-edge fitness and aquatic spaces, plus a variety of programs tailored to different interests and stages of life. Stylists, colorists, massage professionals and estheticians are also on hand to provide spa-quality manicures, facials, haircuts and massages.
The final component of Vibrancy!, the Clubhouse, opened in February. Located on scenic Cochrane Pond near the Village Apartments, the Clubhouse provides a gathering space where all residents can enjoy social events, activities and meetings.
“For us, Vibrancy! is about more than just building new apartments and spaces. It’s about enhancing the quality of life for those we serve,” Burns says. “With a fitness center that includes an indoor walking track, an aquatics center with multiple pools and salon spaces, the Vital Living Center will be a hub of activity for residents and staff alike.”
