Whole Mind and Body Wellness: Here’s What it Means to Us

At Westminster Canterbury Richmond, our vision is to provide members of our community with all the tools they need to live well at every age. This means living each day to the absolute fullest and thriving in an active setting.

That’s why the new Vital Living Center that is part of the Vibrancy! expansion will offer programs to help you live life to the fullest in an active, beautiful setting and caring community. Once completed, the Vital Living Center at Westminster Canterbury Richmond will include a brand-new Fitness and Aquatic Center, plus a renovated Ellipse for outdoor recreation.

But physical well-being is just one piece of the health and wellness puzzle. The new Vital Living Center represents a continued evolution of our concept of comprehensive wellness, where all facets of wellness are treated as important elements of living independently and living well.

Wellness at Every Level of Life

Too often, healthcare is built around managing sickness rather than proactively managing health. At Westminster Canterbury Richmond, we reject that idea. We want to instead shift mindsets to proactively striving for wellness as a holistic and comprehensive pursuit. The new spaces at Vibrancy! will reflect strength and effervescence to encourage residents to maintain an independent lifestyle.

With the new Vital Living Center, our vision is to inspire the mind, nurture the spirit and strengthen the body by embracing all dimensions of wellness at every level of life.

Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness is all about continual growth that assists in maintaining respectful and satisfying relationships, expressing and managing feelings, and coping with stress. We offer chaplain support as well as support groups for residents who are recovering from a loss or are going through a tough time and benefit from being part of a group where they can share their feelings and gain encouragement.

Intellectual Wellness

Continuous learning does wonderful things for our mind and body. Whether you’re trying out a new hobby or looking to change your eating habits, you’ll need to educate yourself. Here at Westminster Canterbury Richmond, our goal is to make it easy for you to acquire new skills by ensuring that everything you need is at your fingertips.

We believe that it’s important for all of us to embrace an open, active mind and a commitment to lifelong learning, pursue creativity and make decisions effectively. You can participate in lectures on a multitude of topics including the arts, current events and relevant health topics. Brush up on your computer skills with a technology class or learn to draw at a studio arts class. Join one of our resident-led book clubs or visit the library that’s right on campus.

There’s always something to learn here. The education studio in the new Vital Living Center will provide appropriate learning from our experts. Take advantage of classes and programs on nutrition, disease management, healthy aging and more.

Social Wellness

Members of the Westminster Canterbury Richmond community tell us that socialization is very important to them. This comes as no surprise, since having strong relationships with family, friends and neighbors is key to a thriving life. People shape our expectations, hopes and goals.

That’s why we designed spaces to encourage social interaction and networking. The lobby in the Vital Living Center will be a meeting place for friends, while new dining options mean having more choices for sharing delicious meals together. Combining social interaction with physical activity is great for stress relief and improves performance. Soon, you’ll delight in a new exercise studio where you can practice yoga, Tai chi and Pilates; play pickleball with your grandkids; or even try kickboxing with neighbors.

In addition, Westminster Canterbury Richmond regularly offers residents opportunities to take trips to cultural and historical landmarks, art galleries and museums, and shopping. Our Sara Belle November Theatre is where you can meet up with friends for a special performance – without having to leave the neighborhood. There’s also on-campus shopping, such as the Marketplace and Galleria.

Occupational Wellness

You’ve lived a meaningful life up to this point, and there’s no reason to stop now. Through working or volunteering, we hope that you will continue to make good use of your gifts, skills and talents to gain purpose, happiness and enrichment in your life. Here, you’ll find residents who remain in the paid workforce as well as many who donate their time right here on our campus and throughout the greater Richmond area. Ample volunteer opportunities can help you connect with the greater community and feel a deep sense of purpose by making a real difference.

Spiritual Wellness

Nurture your spirit by cultivating a sense of meaning, purpose and belonging. Through our on-site worship services, religious study groups and lectures in our Spiritual Center, we hope that you’ll experience greater fulfillment in life and build the resiliency needed to overcome challenges.

Physical Wellness

Physical wellness is all about maintaining a healthy quality of life through a balance of physical activity, nutrition and mental well-being. With the new Vital Living Center, physical wellness opportunities abound – including all-new fitness rooms, an Aquatic Center and group exercise classes. You can read all about them here. We also host wellness lectures and programs such as our fall prevention program, provide healthy meal options in our dining rooms and offer dietitian services for when you need a nutrition expert.

In the Aquatic Center, there are three heated pools for you to enjoy. Water temperatures are set for ideal biological performance. First, the lap swimming pool, which is 75 feet long by 30 feet wide, has four lap lanes and the water temperature is set at approximately 80°F to 82°F. Second, the fitness class pool, which is 65 feet long by 60 feet wide, ranges from 3-½ feet to 5 feet deep and the water temperature is set at 87°F. Third, the relaxing hot tub is kept at 100°F to 101°F. All pools have salt-generated chlorine.

Environmental Wellness

There’s something about being in nature that relaxes and comforts a person. The grounds of Westminster Canterbury Richmond are designed to help residents embrace a lifestyle of respect and appreciation for their surroundings. Resident garden plots and greenhouses mean you can get your hands dirty. Go for a pensive walk along the nature trail, Cochrane Pond and other numerous accessible gardens. Volunteer for the Garden Committee or Recycling Committee where you can learn from others and give back to Mother Nature.

Live Life to the Fullest

Making whole mind and body wellness a priority means paving the way to a healthier future. Your health is our priority, and that’s why we are designing new spaces that allow us to continuously grow our programming with dedicated staff who are experts in various areas of exercise and nutrition science. They are here to help you stay motivated to put your health and wellness first so that you can continue to have enough energy to do all the things you love.

There has been a lot of progress made in health and wellness research as we grow older. At Westminster Canterbury Richmond, we are proud to continuously improve our existing award-winning programs to help residents pursue heathy aging. We hope that by providing ample opportunities for socializing, stellar amenities and innovative fitness programs, living at Vibrancy! will empower you to stay healthy and fit for years to come.
